Free Comic Day or FCBD (May 7th) was proposed by Joe Field in the August 2001 issue of Comics & Games Retailer magazine. The event was then launched in 2002, co-ordinated by the industry's single large distributor Diamond Comic Distributors.
Unfortunately, the Comics & Games Retailer magazine ceased publication back in 2007. However, Free Comic Book Day event took off around the world with many retailers organising special events in stores to celebrate the day.
